You know how overwhelming those first few months with a newborn can be, right? This book feels like chatting with a friend who’s been there and gets the chaos, the sleepless nights, and all the questions you’re too tired to ask. Lucy Atkins blends solid medical knowledge with real-life parenting moments, so you get practical advice without the scary jargon. It covers everything from what gear you actually need (and what’s just fluff) to decoding your baby’s cries and figuring out sleep routines that work for everyone. Whether you’re at home trying to survive the early days or wondering how to balance work and parenthood later on, this guide keeps things real and supportive.
Parents appreciate how this book balances expert knowledge with a friendly tone. It’s often praised for being easy to read and genuinely helpful when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Many find the practical tips and honest approach reassuring during those unpredictable early months.
This is a book that gives you an overview of parenthood, especially the first year after baby just born. It is neutral enough, and with pictures guidance on some topics, making it easier to follow. Should be an easy first book to read, understand, share and discuss with parent regarding parenthood. I could not have asked for for more as the first book to read, about the first year, and pre-empting what we might face together as a family.
– CHOI, Jonathan
This was a brilliant book, funny and great content for parents and anyone involved in looking after a baby. It’s practical and not patronising – I defiantly recommend this book to others who want to think about issues beyond the birth. The kindle version is good with cross linking to jump to a section and looking up words easily, adding my own notes and bookmarks but paper has its advantages too if you want to see tables better.

If you’re looking for a parenting book that feels like a trusted companion through those early years, this one’s worth a spot on your shelf. It’s packed with advice from the experts at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, covering everything from pregnancy to your child’s fifth birthday. You’ll find clear explanations about feeding, sleep, development milestones, and common health worries, all without the usual overwhelm. It’s not the kind of book you read cover to cover in one go, but more like a go-to reference when you need a bit of reassurance or practical tips. Whether you’re dealing with a fussy sleeper or just curious about what’s normal, this guide breaks things down in a calm, straightforward way.
Parents often mention how this book feels like a reliable friend during those uncertain early years. It’s praised for being thorough without being overwhelming, and for offering practical advice that’s easy to understand when you’re juggling a million other things.
I don’t think you’d want to sit down and try and “read” this book cover to cover, it’s more a useful reference. As a new parent (even second time through) things come up all the time where you’d welcome a bit of authoritative information on what might be going on. It can’t do the parenting for you, or even really tell you how, but it does seem to give better, more useful, descriptions and pointers than randomly googling about. Most of the time, after your kid has done something very odd, or a doctor has said something alarming about “what it might be” in the way they do, you are left randomly being anxious. This book tends to break stuff down and tell you what might be going on and why (usually) there’s nothing to worry about, but what to watch for. A bit of informed peace of mind.

My wife was given a hard back edition when we had our first child, James. It proved invaluable and a reliable point of reference as he grew. In hindsight, it was perhaps one of the best and most practical presents we ever received, being inexperienced new parents. It became our “bible” and helped enormously when we had two further family additions. Now James has grown up and recently had a baby boy of his own. So my wife and I presented him with his own copy of The Great Ormond Street Baby & Child Care Book. The book has helped in answering the concerns that all new parents would have and provides peace of mind in determining answers for those “what should I do if……” situations. It is a great investment for parents who really care about the welfare of their offspring and continued development.

We used the day-by-day pregnancy book and found it an excellent companion for a first time pregnant couple. The baby version seemed like a no-brainer purchase and it has been. A great review of what to expect in terms of growth, behaviour and development, there is enough science to digest and inform but not so much that you need a qualification in biology or psychology to understand it. There is also, crucially, a lack of emotional wording. This is not about someone’s opinion, this is not a “how to raise your child” book and it does not assume that you are an idiot. What it does is provide you with the foundation knowledge to help you find your own way and assume that you have the wherewithal to do just that. We like to read a week in advance once a week together, a little ritual that we enjoy and find helpful.

This book is so good, it’s so hard to find a book for people who’s dyslexic and I would say this book was so easy to read and nagivate through with the pictures and writing.

If you’ve ever felt like your temper gets the better of you when parenting, this book offers a fresh, practical approach to handling those tricky moments. It’s split into two parts: first, helping you understand and manage your own anger, and second, guiding you on how to encourage better behaviour in your kids without losing your cool. The advice feels realistic and down-to-earth, with exercises and strategies you can try day-to-day. Whether it’s dealing with tantrums or just the everyday stresses of family life, this guide helps you create a calmer, more positive home environment.
Parents appreciate how this book breaks down anger without blame and provides real tools to change family dynamics for the better. Many mention feeling more in control and seeing improvements in their children’s behaviour after applying the techniques.
Reading this book has helped me to understand that managing anger effectively is a crucial skill for parents. It teaches that anger, when mismanaged, can lead to strained relationships between parents and children, but when properly handled, it can be used as a tool for growth and understanding. The most important lesson from this book is that anger is not inherently bad. It’s how we manage and express it that matters.
– Ann Zeus
This book really made me realise I’m not alone. The anger I have felt since having children completely surprised me. This book has given me the tools I need to stay calmer and deal with situations with my children in a different way that is better for everyone in the family. I’ve even seen changes in the behaviour between my two boys to each other as well as me and my partner. Great book!

A somewhat tongue in cheek handbook for any new parent! Written in the style of a car manual the book is humorous reading for anyone about to have a new baby. It’s nicely illustrated, witty comments and certainly explains how to care for a new addition to the family, albeit in a lighthearted way. A great gift for a baby shower!
– Lucy
Just a little extra to put in with a new baby’s gifts to give the new parents a smile. It is sweet and funny and I am sure they will enjoy it. It is written like a car manual and comparisons between the new baby and the car are made in a humorous way, for example the “exhaust” 🙂 For the low price I think it’s a lovely little add on gift for any new parents.

When selecting a parenting book, consider what stage of parenthood you are in and the specific topics you want to learn about. For example, if you are an expectant father, a book like “I’m Going to be a Dad!: The Ultimate Pregnancy Handbook for First-Time Fathers” priced at £11.91 offers practical advice tailored to your role during pregnancy. If you want guidance on coping with your baby’s first year, “First-Time Parent: The Honest Guide to Coping Brilliantly and Staying Sane in Your Baby’s First Year” at £14.55 is a comprehensive and approachable option. Look for books with clear, well-structured chapters, up-to-date information, and positive reviews that mention practical tips. Also, consider your preferred format—some find illustrated or interactive books easier to digest, while others prefer straightforward text. Reading sample pages or reviews online can help you decide if the tone and style suit you.
Yes, parenting books remain highly relevant even in the digital age. While online resources can be overwhelming and sometimes contradictory, books often provide carefully researched, structured, and reliable information. They allow you to explore topics in depth without distractions or misinformation. For instance, “The Great Ormond Street New Baby & Child Care Book” (£23.83) serves as a trusted reference you can turn to repeatedly for authoritative advice. Books also offer the benefit of expert insight and experience, often presented in a calm, reassuring tone that can reduce anxiety. Moreover, many books include practical checklists, clear do’s and don’ts, and strategies that you can apply immediately, which can be harder to find in fragmented online content.
To get the best from parenting books, use them as ongoing resources rather than one-time reads. For example, books like “The Month-by-Month Baby Book” (£19.65) are designed to be read gradually, offering timely advice that matches your baby’s development stage. Set aside regular time to read a chapter or section relevant to your current situation, and apply the tips in real life. Keep notes or highlight passages that resonate with you for quick reference. Don’t hesitate to combine books with other trusted sources like healthcare professionals or parenting groups. Remember, no book has all the answers, so use them to build confidence and understanding, adapting advice to fit your family’s unique needs. Finally, consider sharing books with your partner to ensure you both feel informed and supported throughout the journey.
Choosing the right parenting book can provide you with the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate the early stages of parenthood. Whether you are preparing for pregnancy, supporting your partner, or managing the first year with your baby, the books featured here offer a range of perspectives and practical advice tailored to your needs.
